A son of John Marshall and Rebecca Stone Vanhoy, (and a grandson of Abraham and Verlinda Elizabeth Marshall Vanhoy). He moved with his family to Henry Co. Missouri sometime before 1850, where he spent most of his young life. He enlisted in Company H, 7th Mo. Cavalry on Feb. 3, 1862 and served until the close of the war, and was later married to Miss Jennie Rhodes. They moved to Klickitat Co. in 1878. (He was a nephew of Hamilton J. Vanhoy, who was his father's brother, and had also come to Klickitat county.) He had a farm about two and a half miles from Goldendale. Six children were born to William and his wife, Jennie. As known, they were Rebecca A., Martha J., Laura C., Ella M., Willie B.(a daughter), and John R. Vanhoy.
