Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Springfield, Illinois 1924-1928; St. Philip Lutheran Church, St. Louis, Missouri 1928- . Both of these congregations were all African-American.
He served as the president of the General Conference of Mission Workers and Mission Congregations of the Synodical Conference of North America 1930-1946.
He founded the St. Louis Society for Better Race Relations in 1938.
Missionary-at-large for the LCMS's Northern Illinois District in Chicago, IL 1947.
Helped to organize and found the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America, Valparaiso, IN 1953, becoming its executive secretary in 1954 and director of research in 1964.

Editor of "The Vangard", the publication of LHRAA.
