The Rev. Dr. Grieg Taber, rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin at 139 West 46th Street, died of a heart attack Wednesday night while attending “Tosca” at the Metropolitan Opera. He was 69 years old.
Father Taber's interest in music was lifelong and his church, just off Times Square, attracted lovers of liturgical music.
He was born in Omaha, and he attended St. Stephen's College in Annandale, N. Y., and Seabury Divinity School in Evanston, Ill.
Father Taber was ordained a deacon in 1919 and advanced to the priesthood within a year. For the first two years of his priesthood he was a master at the Shattuck School in Faribault, Minn., and for the next seven, a chaplain and instructor in history and Greek at the Pawling (N.Y.) School.
He was rector of All Saints Church in Dorchester, Mass., for 12 years before becoming rector here in 1939. Father Taber was a bachelor. There are no immediate survivors. ~ bio by Carter Rezin
