Funeral Is Held
For Mrs. Stewart
Final rites were held at 2 p.m. today at Green Kleinegger Chapel for Mrs. Ruth Mims Stewart, 69, who died Monday morning at the Minden Sanitarium after a sudden illness. Dr. Henry Rickey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, conducted the services, and interment was in the Minden Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Dan W. Stewart, Jr., whom she married in 1922; one son, Dan W. Stewart, 111, of Minden; an uncle, Mrs. Sam Mims of Minden; and aunt, Mrs. J.O. Cupples of Shreveport; and seven grandchildren.
A prominent civic and church worker, Mrs. Stewart was a native of Crowley. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Garden Club, Book Club, Library Board, was a certified flower judge, was chairman of the Cleanest City Committee the year Minden was judged the "Cleanest City in Louisiana," and was named Woman of the year in 1961.
Mrs. Stewart was recognized as the fourth winner of the "Woman of the Year" Award given by the Minden Press-Herald at the 1961 Downtown Lions Club Sweetheart Banquet. She was cited at that time for her leadership in the many activities already listed. She was also a former school teacher, a member of the American Legion Auxilliary, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In 1962 she retired, after 32 years service on the Webster Parish Library Board. She had served continuously since the beginning of the board in 1929 until her retirement. She was President of the Department Club prior to the establishment of the Library Board and led a long struggle to obtain aid in providing reading boods throughout the parish.
During her 32 years service to the board, Mrs. Stewart served as Vice-President 10-12 years.
Pallbearers were: C.O. Holland, Howard Davenport, Willard Roberts, Warren Dietrich, John T. Campbell and J. Weston Miller.
Named honorary pallearers were W. Banks Craton, Bert David, J.E. Harper, Jasper Goodwill, Hassell Gray and Claude Huckabay.
