William Edward "W.E." Miller, 69, died Monday, April 2, 2007. Mr. Miller was born June 25, 1937, the son of the late Robert Sterling Miller and Carrie Goodman Miller, who survives. He was born and raised in Troutman. He enjoyed pitching high school and American Legion baseball and graduated from Troutman High School in 1955.

After graduating, W.E. began work at Troutman Shirt Mills in Mooresville. It is there that he met his wife, Irene Hodge Miller, whom he married June 29, 1958. In 1966 he started a long career as a truck driver for Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation. He drove for Carolina until it closed. He then drove for ABF until his retirement in 1998. W.E. was a member of Teamsters Local 71.

He particularly enjoyed proving his driving skill and competed for over 30 years in driving competitions. He was the State Driving Champion in 1990 and 1992. Most recently he won the State Driving Championship, Old Timers Division, in 2005 and 2006. As a retired driver, W.E. was employed, until his death, at Memory Lane Car Museum, which fed his love for old cars and racing.

He was a life-long member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. He served the church in many capacities over the years from MJY Leader, Sunday school teacher, lay leader to Sunday school superintendent. He was always an active member of the choir.

W.E. is lovingly survived by his wife, Irene Hodge Miller; his daughter, Carla Miller Norman and husband, Hunter; his son, Douglas Edward Miller and wife, April; his granddaughter, Parker Douglas Norman; his grandson, Niels Spencer Norman; his mother, Carrie Goodman Miller; and his cats, Spike and Matilda, all of Mooresville.

Active pallbearers were his son, Doug Miller; son-in-law, Hunter Norman; his nephews, Robbie Fero, Brian Fero and Billy Smith; Chad Overcash; Sam Beam; and his brother- in-law, Charles Hodge. Honorary pallbearers included Austin Smith and his grandchildren, Parker and Spencer Norman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to The Hospitality House at Carolinas Medical Center, c/o Sue Wise, P.O. Box 36891, Charlotte, NC 28236; Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Karen Sherrill, P.O. Box 838, Troutman, NC 28166 and Victory Junction Gang, 4500 Adams Way, Randleman, NC 27317.

Funeral service was held Thursday, April 5 at 2 p.m. at Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. David Reep and Rev. Charlene Hutchings officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Neill Funeral Home served the family.
