In 1943, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth Congress, Seventy-ninth and Eightieth Congresses, served until 1949, reelected to the Eighty-second Congress, serving (1951-53). Not candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death at age 62. He also was the father of billionaire investor Warren Buffett.
