Captain Reeves enlisted and served in the Royal Flying Corps (Royal Air Force) during the First World War, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross for 'an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy'.

He had four confirmed victories to his credit during the war, and shortly after the signing of the Armistice he assumed command of RAF 218 Squadron.
