Elijah was licensed to preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1828, ordained deacon at Sandwich, Ct., and elder at Northfield, M. H. He organized the Methodist Episcopal Church at Bellows Falls, Vt., 1836, and was pastor at Rochester, N. H., 1841, and was specially active in the cause of temperance, holding temperance meetings at the schoolhouses. He was in the ministry for thirty-seven years.
He married Almira Bartlett, daughter of Stephen Bartlett & Phoebe Whittaker, on 19 Sep 1832 in Deering, N. H.
