DES MOINES, IOWA -- Erma Bowen, 92, formerly of Culbertson, died Tuesday, August 3, 1999 at General Hospital in Des Moines.

She was born June 19, 1907 on a farm in Custer County near Callaway to Roscoe W. and Charlotte (Daggett) Lincoln. She lived on the farm with her family until her senior year of high school when they moved to Kearney. She graduated from Kearney High School in normal training. She attended Kearney State Teachers College for one year and taught at Green Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse, for two years. In 1929 she and her parents moved to Beverly where she taught 44 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

On September 30, 1931 she married Dean Bowen in Kearney, giving up her teaching position because married women weren't allowed to teach. The couple lived in the Culbertson area from 1935-1995. In 1953 she returned to teaching as a second grade teacher in Culbertson. In 1959 she earned her bachelor of arts degree in education from Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney. She began teaching fourth grade in Oberlin, Kansas in 1960 and accepted a position teaching the fourth grade in McCook in 1968. She retired from teaching in 1972.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; a past member and president of the Culbertson Federated Women's Club; past member of the Culbertson Garden Club; and a bridge club she played in for more than 50 years.

In 1995 the couple moved to Ames, Iowa to live with their daughter and son-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dean; two brothers, Raymond Lincoln and Lester Lincoln; one sister, Alta Swift, and an infant son, Jerry James Bowen in 1933.

Survivors include one son, Larry and wife, Jo Bowen of Grapevine, Texas; two daughters, LoAnn and husband, Bob Campbell of Ames; Nancy and husband, Dale Sells of Tampa, Florida; one sister, Juanita Beadle of Kearney; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Glenn Loy officiating. Interment will be at the Culbertson Cemetery. Herrmann Funeral Home of McCook is in charge of arrangements.
