In 1541, Sir Francis Shirley leased Ettington Manor to the Underhill family for a term of 100 years. A notable friend of the Underhills was William Shakespeare.

Francis purchased Breedon Priory Church of St Mary and St Hardulph from Henry VIII as a private burial place for him and his family and successors forever. sir Frances and his son, Sir John and his son Sir George are buried at Breedon in a vault of Alabaster monuments.
