Florence Barbara Overcast, 83, of Everett, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2001.
She was born Sept. 19, 1917, to a pioneer family in Camas Prairie. Her parents Louis and Annie Vacura homesteaded in 1910 on the Montana prairie, farming wheat and oats on their 160 acres.
In 1919, Florence's father sold their homestead and the family moved to Plains where she completed her early education with her 13 brothers and sisters.
While her brothers assisted their father in the family business, Louie's Ford Garage, the sisters were taught the homemaking skills of the busy household. The brothers and sisters have remained close friends throughout their lives.
Florence married Frank Overcast on July 21, 1935, in Spokane. They spent their early years in Plains. On Dec. 15, 1936, their first child, Richard, was born in Missoula.
Both Florence and Frank loved the outdoor life and in 1939 moved to Valdez, Alaska. Their second son, Louis, was born Aug. 8, 1940. Shortly thereafter they moved to Cordova, Alaska, where they enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and excellent fishing.
In 1945, they returned to the Lower 48 and settled briefly in Missoula, where their daughter Barbara Ann was born on Nov. 2, 1945.
In the spring of 1946, they moved to Salmon, Idaho, where Charles Lynn was born on Feb. 9, 1949.
Florence greatly enjoyed using her seamstress talents dressing her daughter and sons.
The nine years spent in Salmon were some of the best of her life, enjoying the outdoors, gardening, visiting with family and raising their family. She was known far and wide for her cooking abilities, especially her cherry pies.
In 1958, Florence and Frank returned to Missoula to provide better education opportunities for their children.
Florence enjoyed her flower garden and the arrival of her grandchildren. She was a grandmother to her own 25 as well as many other children in the neighborhood.
In 1995, Florence moved to Everett, Wash., to be closer to her son and daughter.
Survivors include her children, Richard of Missoula, Louis Overcast of Everett, Barbara Beebe of Kent, Wash., and Charles Overcast of Whitefish; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, her parents and six of her brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Livingston, Malletta & Geraghty Funeral Home, 224 W. Spruce St., followed by services at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
