Rachael was the oldest of the six children born to John H Schaefer and Mary Boesse (Bosse), at their home in Columbus, Indiana. Her father was the owner of the Schaefer Roller Mill, which produced flour.

Rachael graduated from Indiana State Normal College, and taught school for many years, retiring at Lafayette, Indiana.

She married William Enoch Gray on November 15, 1923, in Columbus at the Lutheran Church; Rev. August E. Brauer officiated.

After their marriage, they spent a year in Huntington, West Virginia; they then moved to Lafayette, Indiana for the majority of the rest of their married life. Her husband was an assistant professor at Purdue in mechanical engineering and drafting design.

William and Rachael had two children, Elizabeth and William Jr. Both survived her.

Her husband, William Sr. died in 1967.

Rachael, while living in Lafayette, was active in the Wabash Valley Garden Club, and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, where she participated in the Ladies Society.

Also surviving her were her sister Ruth Percifield of Columbus and her brother John G. Schaefer of Youngstown, Ohio.

Burial was August 13, 1988 at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
