Having actually gone " Missing " on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until August 19, 1944.

Currie served as a Seaman Second Class, U.S.S. Abner Read ( DD-526 ), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Boston, Massachusetts prior to the war. He enlisted in the Navy on November 28, 1942 in Boston.

The " U.S.S. Abner Read ", while conducting an antisubmarine patrol off Kiska, was shaken by an explosion in the aft section of the ship at 0150 on August 18, 1943.

Since the nearest Japanese minefield was reportedly 2,000 yards away the crew thought that they had been hit by a torpedo. The U.S. Navy later concluded that the destroyer had struck a mine.

The destroyer lost " 2 crewman killed in action ~ 69 missing in action ~ 47 wounded ".

Currie was one of the " 69 " crewman declared " Missing In Action " in this explosion during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Currie also has a " cenotaph " with his family in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Boston, Massachusetts.

Historical Note :


The " U.S.S. Abner Read " survived, was repaired, and after participating in multiple other military exercises, was actually sunk by a Japanese dive bomber that was able to get one of it's bombs to go down one of the destroyer's stacks and the bomb exploded in her aft engine room.

From this action the " U.S.S. Abner Read " sank on November 1, 1944 with a loss of 24 of her crew.

The " U.S.S. Abner Read ( DD-526 ) " received four battle stars for her World War II service.
