College Football Coach. He coached the University of Georgia football team from 1939 to 1960, leading the Bulldogs to four Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship titles, one undefeated season, and eight bowl games. He was known as a big advocate of the passing game, and brought it to the forefront of Southern college play. He resigned as head coach 1961, with career record of 140-86-9 and remained on as Athletic Director until retiring in 1963. He was elected to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1966 and was elected posthumously to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
