The son of Daniel Farrington and Ann Elizabeth Silsby, Edward S. Farrington was born in California but spent his teen years in his parent's native Maine. He received an A.B. from Amherst College in 1880 and attended the University of California, Hastings College of Law. He was in the private practice of law in Elko, Nevada from 1886 to 1907. On December 19, 1906, Edward Farrington was nominated by President Theodore Roosevelt to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on January 10, 1907. He assumed senior status on April 30, 1928 and served in that capacity until his death.
