Ethelreda Rose Cochran, 90, of Collinsville, Ill., born Dec. 19, 1923, in St. Paul, Mo., to Catherine and Henry Kruse, German immigrants, was fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church on May 22, 2014.
Beloved wife for 58 years of the late Cletus "Mick" Cochran, the couple met at a Teen Town dance at Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis, Mo., following World War II. After they married they moved to Glendale and later to Orange, California for a few years. When his company transferred him to Kuwait in the Persian Gulf to work in the oil fields, Ethel and their daughter moved back to be with Ethel's family. When Mick returned, they settled in Granite City and later in Collinsville to raise the rest of their family. They have lived on the family farm for more than 50 years. Ethel was a gifted seamstress who worked at Martha Manning, Bridal Originals and Miss Elaine companies. During World War II she worked in a factory in St. Louis making bullets. Later in life she enjoyed travel and twice visited Australia and Europe. She was a dedicated volunteer to Catholic causes and an avid quilter. She also loved gardening, flowers, baking pies and cakes, bird watching, history and reading the New York Times. She also read several books on the story of Lewis and Clark and their journey with Sacagawea. She could give you a tour of the Confluence Center as she had visited it so often. Ethel loved people and they in turn loved her. She was the rock of Gibraltar for our family, and everyone is heartbroken that she is no longer with us, but we will always carry her in our heart and are grateful for the many memories of family get-togethers and travels near and far.
She was preceded in death by loving husband, Cletus; son, Timothy Cochran; sisters, Patricia Schone and Kathleen Cook; brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Jane Kruse.
