On July 1, 1905, Lewis Bullis (21) and Roxie Elledge (18) met and married in Crandle, Johnson County, TN. She said they eloped in Tennessee because her father did not want her to get married.
The 1910 Census shows that Lewis and Roxie lived on Oak Grove Church Road, Reddies River, Wilkes, NC. He worked as a farmer. Their home was next door to his Uncle Thomas & Aunt Laura Bullis, who had no children. Just down the road was Aunt Fanny & Uncle David Gaither with their large family. By 1910, Lewis and Roxie had their first 2 children, Hubert & Alonzo. Their daughter Ruth was born in Nov 1911 and was only 2 months old when her 27 year-old father dropped dead from a heart attack. Lewis had been chopping wood with 5 year-old Hubert outside their house when he suddenly died. Roxie decided to move with her 3 young children back to her parents' home (New Castle), even though her husband's parents, Barker and Matilda Bullis, offered to help her raise the children.
In 1929, Roxie moved in with her newly married daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Alvin Welborn. For the rest of her life she made her home with the Welborns. By 1969, Roxie sustained a broken hip and could only walk a few steps with the aid of a walker. She was blind in the last years of her life, but lived to just a few months shy of her 100th birthday.
