When 2nd Lt. Samuel Luther was born in 1831 in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, his father, William Louther (Luther), was 58 and his mother, Martha Filloon Louther, was 43. For both William and Martha, this was their second marriage. Samuel had one brother named Lewis, and 3 half brothers Robert, James John and William. In 1850 he was living with his parents in Ligonier Township, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, where he was a wagon maker. By 1860 he was living on a large plantation in Yazoo, Mississippi, working as a mechanic. The plantation was owned by a John Mckee. John McKee is also the name of Samuel's mother Martha's first husband. The two McKees are not the same person, but must have been related in some way. Samuel enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861.

Suggested edit: Hello, I'm a researcher for the 12th MS, and I noticed your memorial for Lt. Luther. He was killed on 31 May 1862 at the Battle of 7 Pines outside of Richmond. His name can be found on a casualty list printed in the Richmond Enquirer - Vol 59. No. 21. 10 June 1862- Pg 4. Just thought you might want that bit of information for the memorial. The 12th had their first battle at 7 Pines, although they passed through Williamsburg and were ready to go in and fight.

Suggested edit: The John McKee that lived in Yazoo County Mississippi was his half brother. He was working on John's plantation. John was my great, great, great grandfather and Martha Louther is listed in his will as his mother. Robert R McKee from upper Sandusky Ohio was also a half brother. Eliza Lawhead was his half sister. The mother and sister were both listed in Robert's will.
