David McGalliard was born in Burke County, NC, and was either the son of, or adopted by, John McGalliard and Jennet McTaggart. David was an active man and well-to-do farmer, and was the first postmaster of Nebo about 1850. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. By his first marriage (to an unknown sister of Katherine England) he had two children, Caroline and Nancy, and by his second marriage to Katherine England he had fourteen children: James (died Civil War), Thomas, William, Wesley, Joseph, Robert, Sarah, Lucinda, Catherine, Rebecca (died young), Margaret (died young), Mary, Eliza, America.
