On 12 Feb 1862, Martin enlisted as a Private in Company E, Pennsylvania 107th Infantry Regiment. By the end of the War, he had been promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant.

Martin fought at the Battle of Antietam, in the same unit as his father, Oliver Cochran. Oliver was killed in action at that bloodiest of battles. Martin "soldered on".

In his last battle (just weeks before the end of the War), Martin was shot in his right knee, dying of pneumonia in Baltimore, MD at Jarvis U.S. General Hospital.
