James H. Nelms of Downingtown, Pa

James H. Nelms, 81, born Dec. 11, 1932, of Downingtown, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014, at Freedom Village with his family at his side. He was the beloved husband of Esther A. Worst Nelms, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, J. Michael Nelms and his daughter-in-law, Debbie, of Reinholds, Pa.; two grandsons, Brent of Philadelphia, and his fiance Kate, and Kyle of Pittsburgh; and by his sisters, Eleanor Ames of Freedom Village, and Helen Vilaro of Puerto Rico; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Donald and Harold Nelms, and favorite aunts, Hazel Miller and Ethel Bethea, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Anna and Kelso Worst. All held a special place in Jim's world. He was the son of the late Paul L. and Anna M. Pierce Nelms. Born in Voganville, Pa., he was the youngest of six siblings. His fun-loving personality was a testament to his position as the baby of the family. At a young age, James worked in the family egg business, and even ran the division in South Whitley, Indiana. He, then, proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After serving, his innate love of automobiles drove him to branch out into another business venture in Thorndale, Pa. James was the co-owner of Nelms Lincoln Mercury Car Dealership in Thorndale and also the owner of Oregon Pike Motorcars in Brownstown, Pa. He was a real automobile enthusiast. James loved traveling and going to the beach. Two of his favorite locales were Ocean City, N.J., and Plantation, Fla. He also enjoyed boating, playing cards, and feeding the birds that always seemed to find a friend in Jim. However, most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, whom he adored. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24th, at Central Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Uwchlan Avenue, Downingtown. A visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be private with the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Heartland Hospice, 5 Christy Drive, Brandywine Two, Suite 103, Chadds Ford, PA 19317; or to the Alzheimer's Association , 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
