Found in The State 16 August 1953: Mrs. Vertie Ruth Hollis, 44, wife of Edward Frazier Hollis of 507 South Edisto Avenue, died suddenly at her home Thursday night. Mrs. Hollis was the daughter of John Cone and Elsie Rivers Nixon of Fairfax. She was born in Allendale County, but had lived in Columbia for 35 years. She was a member of the Green Street Methodist Church here. Survivors include besides her husband; one daughter, Mary Louise Hollis; two sons, William Edward and Frank R. Hollis; all of Columbia; four brothers, J. C. Mixon, Claude R. Mixon, and Rudolph J. Mixon, all of Columbia, and Cecil C. Mixon of Yeadon, Pa.; one aunt, Mrs. George F. Young of Fairfax; seven nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 Sunday afternoon from the Dunbar Funeral Home by Dr. M. K. Medlock. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Memorial Park.
