Tom Winger, age 72, of Decorah, IA, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2014, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, IA.

Thomas Leonard “Tom” Winger was born on October 26, 1941, the son of Leonard Kenwick and Esther Olivia (Haugen) Winger in Decorah, Iowa. Tom was baptized on Nov. 16, 1941 and confirmed on May 27, 1956 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Tom graduated from Decorah High School in 1960 and attended Luther College. He was drafted into the US Army and served for two years in Germany. He returned and farmed south of Decorah. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Balk on March 15, 1982 in Waukon, IA. Tom farmed until 2001 and then after retirement from the farm he worked at Walmart as a night stocker for five years. Tom enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and attending all sporting events, including his children’s activities. Tom was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Tom is survived by his wife: Marilyn Winger, Decorah, IA. Two children: Jerad (Kaia Humpal) Winger, Decorah, IA, and Emily (Adam) Wygle, Ionia, IA, with a little Wygle baby due in June. One brother: Jerry (Brinda) Winger, Sterling, IL. Two sisters: Lorraine Burreson, Loveland, CO, and Lorna (Howard) Sande, Decorah, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Roger (Carol) Balk, Decorah, IA; Joe (Gwen) Balk, Frankville, IA; David Balk, Waterloo, IA; Donna Balk, Waterloo, IA; Phyllis (Jerry) Kapler, Waverly, IA; Betty (Jerry) Hebrink, Cresco, IA; Bernice Holthaus, West Union, IA; and Dan Schwickerath, Applington, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Aunts and Uncles: Delores (Vernon) Rovang of Decorah, IA; Elsie Haugen, Decorah, IA; and Donald Rudolph, Arlington, TX, and several cousins.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents: Leonard (1991) and Esther (Haugen) Winger (2008). Brothers and sisters-in-law: Gary Burreson, Roger Holthaus, Carroll Balk, Elaine Schwickerath and Edna (Dave) Borlaug. Aunts and uncles: Edna (Andrew) Spilde, Genevieve (Edward) Omdahl, Adeline (Orville) Bergan, Marian (Norman) Gjevre, Ivan Haugen, Vernon Haugen, Elenore Haugen, Donald Haugen, Leonard Haugen, Elsie (Art) Branhagen, Telford (Tevaleen) Winger, Idella (Ovie) Melaas, Eline (Paul) Wiedeman and Lucille Rudolph.
