Another findagrave user says, " Thomas Jefferson Smith went by "Jeff" according to my mother (his grt-granddaughter). His forbears were "Monosmith" and it may be that the middle initial "M" actually comes from some early record entries written as "M'Smith" where the surname has been shortened."
