Obituary - Claron Ostler Spencer, age 86, died October 30, 1990 in Salt Lake City, Utah after a long illness.
He was born January 8, 1904 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Fanny Elizabeth Ostler and George Sterling Spencer. He married Bertha Jane Chipman in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 31, 1928.
Claron lived all his life in the Salt Lake area, except for the time spent as a missionary to the Netherlands and in his later life, with his wife, as missionaries in the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors' Center. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Utah. It has always been his desire to be actively engaged in church service which he has done over the years serving in many capacities including bishop, high councilman and teacher.
At Zions Bank, where he was employed for over four decades, it soon became evident that a knowledge of the law would be of value to his work. After four years of concentrated study on his own, he was allowed to take the Utah State Bar Exam and tied for the highest score. He enjoyed his work and in some cases handled the financial affairs of families for several generations. He retired from the bank in 1970, having served 26 years as trust officer and the last 17 as a vice president.
In 1972 he was called to serve as president of the Deseret Trust Company, newly created to administer the charitable donations given to the LDS Church. He shared his expertise and wisdom serving on many advisory boards and in public service capacities.
To foster family unity and togetherness, which has always been their prime priority, he and his wife created a place of peace and refuge for the family in upper Weber Canyon. He has a great sense of humor and loved to play golf. He has been a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survived by his wife, Bertha; his sons, Claron C. (Joan), Salt Lake City; Daniel C. (Marian), Centerville; Edward C. (Cynthia), Sandy; daughters, Mrs. Richard (Drew) Timpson, Salt Lake City, Mrs. Richard (Claudia) Sadler, Ogden; 32 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Ione Benion, Logan; Mrs. Allen (Elizabeth) Platt, Salt Lake City; and a brother, Joseph.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 2, 12 noon at the 18th Ward Chapel, 135 A Street. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the ward Friday, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Alzheimers Research at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, 50 North Medical Drive, #2753, Salt Lake City, Utah 84132.
