Private in Company I, commanded by Captain William E Taylor, in the 4th infantry regiment of Iowa volunteers, commanded by Colonel Grenville Dodge. Pvt Samuel Williams was shot and killed by a minnie ball, and buried at Pea Ridge.

Samuel Williams was born Dec 11, 1822, in Monroe county, now West Virginia, son of John and Sarah Williams, both natives of the Old Dominion and the former born of Welsh parents. John and Sarah Williams had three children, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Martha. Samuel was reared on his fathers frontier farm and was educated in one of the primitive log school-houses of Indiana. In that state he was married to Susannah Swinney, like himself born in Virginia and reared in Indiana.
In the year 1847 Samuel Williams with his wife and children made the journey from Indiana to Iowa, in a wagon drawn by horses, arriving here is safety and first settling in Davis County. In 1850 they moved from Davis County to Lucas County and settled on wild land in Warren Township. Here they built a log cabin and devoted their energies to the work of establishing a home. When the war came and continued to rage, Mr. Williams left his home and family and joined the Union ranks.

Children of Samuel and Susannah;
Joseph Parkison Williams, John Williams, Margaret Williams Wells, Delany Ned Williams, Margery Lois Williams Tuttle, Martha Williams Fent, Mary Williams Wilson and Marilda Nancy Jane Williams Tuttle.

His son John Williams also died in the Civil War.
