This information is based on a biography of Margaret's husband in the 1983 book, "Headwaters Heritage History" compiled by the Three Forks Area Historical Society.

Margaret was the daughter of James Crowley and Mariah White Bennett. They are called "English subjects" in the book; according to their FAG Memorials they were born in Ireland. They immigrated as a young family with their firstborn, John, and settled in Livingston, Montana after living for periods of time in Ohio, Missouri, and Minnesota. I suspect their immigration was prompted by the devastating potato famine in Ireland.

Margaret had 8 siblings: brothers John, Pat, Mike, Will, and Jim; and sisters Kate, Mae and Ellen.

Margaret met and married John B. Sloan in Gallatin County where he had a ranch known as "Johnny's Place" (shown on an old hand-drawn map in the book).

Margaret and John's had 7 children: Ethel, Esther, John Paul, Claire, Francis Joseph, Vincent Phillip, and Isabel.

A story included in the book is about Margaret being home alone with a baby while her husband was away on a cattle-buying trip. Two "outlaws" came to the house and demanded she fix them a meal and put them up for a night. Later she discovered they were Billy the Kid and a member of his gang. Hard to imagine!

Another anecdote included that Margaret often complained that she didn't dance as much as she would have liked with her husband at square dances as he was an "excellent square dance caller" and "in great demand" at the area's social gatherings.

Margaret is described as attending lectures-discussions at the Lyceum in Three Forks, a nearby town, with her husband.

Margaret's husband died in 1933. I assume Margaret continued to live at the ranch until she moved to California in 1950 according to the book. I'm unsure of her motivation to move to California, but the biography was written by a Sloan who writes that Margaret lived with her and "her daughter Claire".

Margaret died at age 94 in Los Angeles County; the biography noted she is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. I visited the cemetery last week and was able to locate her grave by visiting the office. I took photos of her marker and also of graves nearby which I will post soon (none have memorials currently, July 2014).

John B. Sloan was my Great Great Uncle, brother of my Great Grandfather, William C. Sloan, so this makes Margaret my Great Great Aunt. I am happy to have learned about Margaret in the course of preparing for a trip to Montana and look forward to learning more about her.
