"Former Cumberland University Business Manager Bone Dies"
Sam Stratton Bone Sr., 94, of Lebanon, a retired real estate investor and farmer who was father of State Rep. Sam Stratton Bone Jr., died yesterday at University Medical Center of an undisclosed cause.
Mr. Bone served more than 69 years as member of the Cumberland University Board of Trust and was a past president of the Lebanon Noon Rotary Club, of which he was a member for more than 60 years.
In 1940 he became full-time business manager of Cumberland University, helping it through a financially unstable time.
"My first association with him was as a businessman" at Cumberland University, said Bernie Bass, a retired Air Force Colonel and longtime friend of Bone. "When the war came along, he kept the school afloat."
Mr. Bone was born in Cherokee County, Texas, and moved to Lebanon with his family when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Cumberland University in 1934.
Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Ligon and Bobo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Other survivors include his wife, Margaret Frances Talley Bone; two other sons, Robert C. Bone and Harold G. Bone, all of Lebanon; a sister, Leila Thompson, Hampden-Sydney, Va.; and five grandchildren.
