The son of Neil McCoy and Rose McNaughton of Lanark he was baptized December 21st, 1847 at Lanark, Lanark Co., Ontario aged three weeks by Rev. P. J. Madden of St. Bridget's (St. John the Baptist) Catholic Church at Perth. He is found with his parents on the 1861 and 1871 Censuses at Lanark Twp. Between 1871 and 1873 he emigrated to the States settling first at Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota where he is found on the 1875 State Census with his father. He married Catherine Elizabeth Tierney shortly after the 1875 Census and by the spring of 1877 they had removed to Kelso Twp., Traill Co., North Dakota.
