Suggested edit: Death or Mr. Walter Newman.

After an illness of three weeks of the grip, though in declining health for several years, Mr. Walter Newman departed this life at his residence about two miles west of New Market,' Va., at seven o'clock Wednesday evening, February 15,1899, in the 82d year of his age. He was a son of Mr. Samuel Newman and wife Mary and born in the house in which he died.

His wife Caroline Newman (daughter of the late Dr. J. W. Rice) died June 15, 1897. Their children surviving are Mrs. Capt., George W. Koontz, of Woodstock, Mr. John W. Newman, of near this place, Mrs. Dr. Wm. Cline, of Woodstock, Mrs. Hugh Danner, of near Staunton, and Mr. C. E. Newman, living at the home place, his son Samuel G, (who married Miss Mollie Noel) and two daughters preceded him to the Spirit world—all of whom married except the two latter, who died in youth. His brother Dr. A. M. Newman (aged 90) and sister, Miss Ann B. Newman, both residing in Harrisonburg, Va., survive him, his sisters Margaret Moore (widow of Corydon), Mrs. Kittie Summers (widow of Jacob), brother John Newman and sister Bettie having also preceded him in death.

During several different periods Mr. Newman and family lived in New Market, and removed to his farm about twenty-five years ago where he has ever since resided. He served as assessor of the county just prior to the War Between the States, as judge and commissioner of election later in life, and was a trustee of the Polytechnic Institute at the time of his death. He was well informed (a constant reader), a man of strong convictions and inflexible will, a good neighbor, a prominent and influential citizen whose death will be lamented by wide circle of relatives, friends, and acquaintances.

His funeral took place, congregating at his late residence at ten o'clock on Friday morning, Feb. 17, and service thereafter in the Methodist Church and interment in St. Matthew Lutheran cemetery, this place, Rev. R. M. Wheeler officiating.

The following acted as pallbearers; Capt. B. Z. Price, Messrs. B. T. Bowman, Samuel Garber, Wm. Olinger, David Roller, and Henry Henkel. New
Market Valley.
