Headstones for James and his wife, Nancy, are not found in the Hughey Cemetery; however, the cemetery is on old family property which James purchased through Land Patents. The property stayed in the Hughey family until 1937.

Between 11/10/1840 and 2/1/1859, James Hughey purchased seven (7) pieces of property through three (3) land patents in Amite Co., MS, from the USA Bureau of Land Management: approximately 359 acres.
Also, 1 Jan 1827, James Hughey, along with William Dickson and Robert Sims purchased 533.81 acres in Wilkerson Co., MS, through one (1) land patent.
