She was a native of Durham, daughter of the late Fred and Norma Childers Smith, step-daughter of the late Sybil Childers-Morgan, graduated from Durham Academy with honors, honors exchange student to France, graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy, member of Vestibule AME Zion Church in Kings Mountain, pharmacist at Winn Dixie, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
