Anatomist and surgeon. His younger brother John(qv)was buried at Westminster Abbey and has a memorial there. He was born in East Kilbride, and went into medicine in 1737. He trained in anatomy and specialised in obstetrics.In 1764, he became physician to Queen Charlotte and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767. In 1770 he built himself a medically furnished house that formed the nucleus of the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow Uni. His niece was the literary figure Joanna Baillie (qv).
