James Richard Kern, 61, of Interlachen (formerly of Miami) passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. James "Jimmy" or "Old man" was born to Francis and Laura Kern on November 9, 1952 in Miami. He graduated from North Miami Senior High. He retired from Publix Supermarkets as a meat cutter and relocated his family to Interlachen in 1995. Jimmy enjoyed fishing and grilling for the family. He was an avid University of Miami Hurricanes fan and proudly wore the team logo every day. His family was the most important thing to him. Jimmy was happy go lucky with an easy smile and loved to make people laugh. He was always busy doing something around the yard or helping others. Jimmy didn't know how to sit still.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Laura Kern; and two nephews, Arthur Clipper, Jr., and William G Grenig, Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Donna Kern; six children, Adam Schlieger (Brittany), Brian Schlieger, Colleen Underwood (James), Danielle Kern, Erica Kern, and Felicia Adkins (Norman); two brothers, David Kern (Cheryl) and Gerald Kern; three sisters, Laura Grenig (William), Barbara Clipper, and Joanne Sawyer; a grandson, Hunter Schlieger; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. No additional services are scheduled.
