Emily was the third of twelve children and the second of five daughters of David Harrison Baughman (1839-1913) and Mary DeLaney (1842-1914).

The Shanefelters married in 1883 in Methodist Church in Stahlstown, Pennsylvania, and had one daughter, Agnes. She married Alex Palmer from around Latrobe and they had three sons and two daughters. One son, Milford Jerome "Deke" became the father of golfer, Arnold Palmer.
