Son of Edgar H. and Valeria Schirts Byrd.
Married Kathryn Telfer December 18, 1946. She preceded him in death April 18, 1976.
Married Judy Bull Wolfe February 18, 1978. She preceded him in death March 6, 2010.
survivors include children and step-children, William (Vicki) Byrd, Richard (Jonell) Byrd, Lucille (richard) Griffiths, Elizabeth (Alan) Fenters, William (Anne) Wolfe, James (Ann) Wolfe, Robert (Carol) Wolfe, Henry (Dawn) Wolf, Audrey (Steve) Dirksen and Stephen (Chris) Wolfe; 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he was a member of the Army Specialinzed Training Corps, Calvary Division. He also became a member of the Merchant Maries to serve on a medical ship transporting 600 horses to Poland as part of the Marshall Plan.

He was a graduate of Michigan State School of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Rensselaer, and moved to Peru in 1954 where he practiced until retiring in 2000 after 55 years as a verterinarian.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. Other memberships include Sons of the American Revolution and a Free Mason of the Masonic Lodge. he was past president of the North Central Indiana Veterinary Association.

Celebration of life Service 10am Thursday, May 8 at First Presbyterian Church, Peru, with Pastor Stephen Quinlan officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2pm Thursday. Visitation 5-7pm Wednesday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home.
