COVERED WAGON PIONEER DEAD

Mrs. Olive Almira Sumpter, 94, a resident of the Tri-State area for the last 88 years, died at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Orofino General Hospital. Death was caused by cancer. Mrs. Sumpter had been in ill health for the last three years and entered the hospital last month.

She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Baldwin on March 15, 1860, in Illinois.

When she was 5, she crossed the plains with her family coming to Oregon. The arduous trip was made in a covered wagon drawn by oxen.

Nine months later the family moved to Pine City, Wash., and then moved to Dayton.

She was married to Samuel Sumpter in Columbia County, Wash., on Feb. 23, 1879. The couple farmed near Dayton where their five children were born.

IN 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Sumpter moved to Idaho and farmed in the Nezperce-Mohler district until ill health forced him to retire in 1912. At that time, they moved to Lapwai where he died on Aug. 11, 1925

Often Reminisced
Mrs. Sumpter often reminisced of her trip across the plains, of the "wet year" at Dayton when fields remained muddy all year round, and of the simple but dramatic evert-day happenings of a farm wife in the latter part of the last century.

After the death of her husband, she remained at Lapwai and was reluctant to level the village. Finally, in 1941, she was no longer able to live alone and moved to Orofino to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hamilton Bryant.

Survivors include Mrs. Bryant; her son, Earl Sumpter, Lewiston; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

Two daughters, Martha and Lulia, and a son, Fred, preceded Mrs. Sumpter in death.
