Darlene Marie Thill was born 8-1-1937 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She was raised in the Catholic faith and graduated from Brookings High School in 1957. Darlene went on to nursing school in La Crosse, Wisconsin to be a nursing aide. She returned to South Dakota to work in Aberdeen at the local hospital.

While there she met Bernard Shields, who was stationed nearby. On October 24 of 1959, Darlene and Bernard were married in St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Brookings. They immediately moved to make their home and raise a family in Janesville, Wisconsin. There they raised their four children.

Darlene was a homemaker; however, she worked many part-time and nighttime jobs throughout her life. She enjoyed making many different types of arts and crafts. She canned many of the garden vegetables they grew and enjoyed baking.

They spend many weekends dancing together at the Moose Lodge as well as activities at the Senior Center. They also spend many years wintering in a home they owned in Florida.

Darlene passed away on May 3, 2014, at the age of 76 years in Janesville, Wisconsin. She left behind a husband, four children, 6 grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Two siblings and many cousins. She was proceeded in death by her parents Francis "Butch" and Hazel Ellis Thill, numerous aunts and uncles, and a few cousins.
