Sam was noted in the Pinckney community as being a "good-natured, whole-souled, use-everyone-well sort of man." What a wonderful legacy and honor.

Sam was a harness maker who owned a shop in downtown Pinckney. The Gilchrist homestead was about two miles north of the village.

The first six Gilchrist children died as noted on their memorials. Sam and Charlotte then had a son, their last child, Aubrey, who grew to adulthood, married, and had a son of his own. Aubrey disappeared in January of 1916 and was never seen or heard from again. Sam did not live long enough to experience this particular loss.

Sam would be proud to know that the Gilchrist name is still alive, in the form of his great grandson a nationally noted environmental biologist.

In 2020 I learned the sad news of the 2019 death of George Winston Gilchrist, the only descendant of Aubrey H. Gilchrist and his parents. George was survived by his wife and their son. George and I had communicated online a number of years ago, and he revealed he had inherited the Gilchrist photo album. I, as diplomatically as possible, reached out to George's family inquiring about the possibility of preserving the album. To date, I have not received a response. Should I ever hear from the family I will update the information.
