Mattie Webber Rhoden Little, age 88, passed in peace on the 27th of April, 2014 in Austin, Texas, where she had lived since November of 2001. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Memorial service will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Grimes Funeral Chapels, 728 Jefferson St., Kerrville, Texas. Dr. Bill Blackburn will preside. Graveside services for the family will be held later at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas, where she will be buried with her late husband James G. Rhoden.

On July 15, 1925, Mattie Marie Webber arrived as the seventh of nine children born to Nellie (Green McMath) and Charley Ashley Webber of Baytown, Texas. The Webber kids made lifelong friends wherever they went.

Graduating from Goose Creek High School during World War II, Mattie worked for Humble Oil and Refinery Company for four years until marrying James Gordon Rhoden in 1946 after he returned from service in the Army Air Corp. Their life together started in College Station with James attending Texas A&M and soon included caring for the "first" family of Jess and Jody. After James finished college, the family moved around Texas while James managed ranches. Mattie learned to be a country girl making butter, hunting, and discovered that she had a gift for animal husbandry. In 1953 she learned the depth of her strength when one son contracted polio. The next decade was spent helping him gain strength and skills to live independently. The "second" family of Donis and Dana came ten years after the first.

After choosing to move to Kerrville, the family joined the fellowship of Trinity Baptist Church where Mattie taught in the Beginners and the Primary Sunday School Departments for twelve years. She also enjoyed being a 4H Club leader, Cub Scout den-mother, and a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader which allowed her to work with children and share her knowledge of gardening, sewing, baking and crafts.

The next major trial was the year spent helping James fight a losing battle with cancer which brought more changes to her life; James died in 1978 with two children still in high school. After her husband's death, Mattie worked with her old Baytown friends the Tucks in their Kerrville Realty office, at Fawcett Insurance Agency, and Grimes Funeral Chapels for several years. In the 1970s the Rhoden family ran Opa's barbeque restaurant and the Country Kitchen next to the Point Theater. Volunteering also helped keep Mattie active and friendships helped sustain her.

Mattie married JY Little of Kerrville in 1992 and enjoyed traveling to visit her new extended family, but was widowed again in 2002.

After living and working in Kerrville, Texas for over 35 years, Mattie moved to Austin in 2001 to be closer to her grandchildren (Brigid and Mattie Rhoden), and other immediate and extended family. She always delighted in the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces/nephews. For the last decade Mattie lived in Austin, making friends wherever she found herself.

Mattie Rhoden Little is survived by her children Jess Rhoden (Margaret Thompson) of Robertsdale, Alabama, Jody Rhoden of Kerrville, Donis Rhoden (Sally Baulch) of Austin, and Dana Rhoden Broussard (Remus Broussard) of Austin, step-daughter Mary Nell Froehlich of Newport News, VA, grandchildren Brigid and Mattie Rhoden of Austin, three sisters, Grace Keown of Moseley, VA, Ruth Peet of Conroe, TX, and Virginia Fanta of Tucson, AZ, a sister-in-law Jean Webber, and brother-in-law Nick Peet.

The family wishes to thank the residents and staff of Senior Care of Onion Creek and Heart to Heart Hospice for their care and friendship. Our mother's great heart of service is finally at rest.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in her name to one of her charities, the American Cancer Society , the March of Dimes, or Heifer International.

The family invites you to send condolences at www.grimesfuneralchapels.com by selecting the "Send Condolences" link.
