OBITUARY - Navarre Funeral Home

Barney H. Webber was born September 19, 1918, in Dallas, Texas, son of Charlie and Nellie Webber. He died Wednesday morning, February 19, 2014, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 95. He is survived by 4 sons and 1 daughter -- Chuck, Jeff, Ginie, Ben and Will Webber. He had 7 grandchildren, Melissa, Jeffrey, Dean, Paul, Nathan, Quin Webber and Kali Webber Orchard. He had 2 great-grandchildren, Atticus and Derek Webber. Also surviving Barney are 4 sisters, Ruth Peet of Conroe, TX, Mattie Rhoden of Austin, Grace Keown of Moseley VA, and Virginia Fanta of Tucson, AZ. He was pre-deceased by his wife and mother of his children, Betsy Barnes Webber, who died in November, 1997, and by Madeline Harmon Webber, his wife, who died in September, 2012.

Barney Webber served as a teacher of Spanish in Baytown junior and senior high schools for over 30 years. He served as music director at several Baptist churches in the Baytown area from 1955- 1983. As a permanent Baytown resident since 1920, Barney was a source for Baytown history of the 20th century. He was occasionally consulted by local papers for his knowledge of details and events during his lifetime. He proudly served in the US Army in World War II from November 1940 to January 1946 as a 1st Lt. and used the GI bill to pursue his BA and MA at his beloved Baylor University.

Barney served in Gideon's International, leading the Baytown Camp for over 10 years. He worked with the Amigos de los Americas group in the 1980's to provide immunizations and share the gospel in Central and South American countries. He served on the Board of the Baytown Teachers Credit Union from 1967 to 1985, and he always found time to help others through music and humor.

Our dad was honest, patient, and diligent. He believed in Jesus, consistency, and working to support your family. He was a child of the depression who never lacked for anything, for he began work at age 9. All nine children in his family of origin did the same. Barney was a committed Christian who loved to sing and play the piano. At Baylor in 1947 he sang in the choir each Sunday morning to open a religious program and he rejoiced in the Lord through his music his entire life.

As his children we are pleased to announce that Dad is in the hands of God, his savior. His time is up and his wounds are healed in the promises of Jesus.
