Fred W. Mittan,76, of 66 Samoa Dr., Hiawatha, died Tuesday in St. Luke's Hospital after a sudden illness. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery , with military rites by American Legion Hanford Post 5. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home and after noon Thursday at the chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie; three sons, Fred O. of Cedar Rapids, Robert of Gorin, Mo., and Larry of Shellsburg; two daughters, Eva Wright and Sharon Ludwick, both of Cedar Rapids; and two sisters, Mildred Carver of Fairfax and Rosella Kelsey of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving are 37 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, a grandchild and five great-grandchildren.

Fred was born April 23, 1916, in Linn County and married Goldie E. Yerington on April 3, 1937, in Cedar Rapids. He was a truck driver for Wilson and Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of Good News Baptist Church and served in the Army during World War II.

Bishop Robert Eaton of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will officiate. A memorial fund has been established.
