Wava was the daughter of John David SWEET (1905-1960) and Ermal Myrtle SPEARS (1908-1988). Wava was named after her maternal grandmother, Wava M. WHITESELL (1891-1974). Wava's father died when she was only nine years old. She began working as a waitress when she was 14 and still in high school at Mishawaka High (Mishawaka, Indiana). In the last years of her life, she was the owner of Shamrock Cab Company and was a cab driver. She was survived by a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren. Wava's sister, Ruth, died in 1985. Her maternal half-sister, Dorothy, died in 1989.
