"Son of Richard and Mary Hickman, grandson of Roger and Mary Hickman was born in Williamsport, Warren County, Indiana, November 9th, 1842, and in March, 1854, came with his parents to Iroquois County, Illinois. On September 1st, 1861, he enlisted as a soldier in Company C, Twelfth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and on January 1st 1864, re-enlisted as a veteran soldier in the same company and regiment, and with his company took part in many severe engagements during his term of service. Was discharged from the army July 10th, 1865. He was married to Miss Mary Millhollin, daughter of Hugh and Abigail Millhollin. Mary was born September 26th, 1852."
