Rebecca Begay
July 28, 1921 - Sept. 27, 2003 (age 82)

Rebecca Denetsosie Begay died Sept. 27, 2003, in Page. She was born at Gray Mountain on July 28, 1921. She was of the Kiiyaa'aanil (Towering House) Clan, born for the Hashk'aan (Wild Banana) Clan.

She spent her early days as a little girl herding sheep. She went to elementary and high school in Tuba City and graduated valedictorian of her class. She attended nursing school in Ganado, although she didn't get her nursing degree because of financial hardship. She was employed at the Kane County Hospital in Kanab, Utah, before moving to Page in 1957. She worked at Page Hospital for 33 years, retiring in 1990.

With our mother's passing we have come to realize that a big part of our culture is gone. Bur as our mother would say, "As long as you remember me, and keep me in your heart, I will always be with you." We love you, Shi'ma.

Mrs. Begay is survived by her husband, Abe Begay of Page; children Arlene, Alberta, Louis, Leonard, Ameretta, Abel, Albert, Bernda, and Verda; brothers Hoke and Lester; 24 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harvey and Lena Butler, son Abe Bahe Begay Jr. and brother Kee Yazzie.

They lived in the USBR Trailer Park in Kanab, Utah, where most of their children were born, until moving into one of the famous pink transit houses in Page next to the airstrip.

Rebecca and Abe are buried in their Butler-Begay Family Plot on Preston Mesa about 8 miles east of Gap, Arizona.
