Lifetime resident and a descendant of one of Chelan Valley's pioneer families died January 30, 2014 at the age of 100 years and 10 months.
Georgia was born March 20, 1913 in Chelan to George Beadle Flick and Ethel Amelia Wright. The family lived and worked in Chelan until 1917 when they moved to Blockton, Iowa to help farm and care for George's elderly father. Both Georgia and her brother William (Bill) attended school in Blockton and Georgia graduated from Blockton High School in 1932, soon afterwards the family moved back to their home in Chelan. During World War II Georgia worked at the Boeing Company in Seattle. On June 5, 1942 she married James Francis Hanson in Chelan. They raised 1 daughter, Rita.
She was very proud of the fact that both her maternal grandparents and her father helped settle the Chelan Valley. Her maternal grandfather Robert Perry Wright, wife Josephine and their 10 children, arrived in Chelan in 1899. Robert and his brother Thomas Allen Wright planted one of the first apple orchards in the valley. The Robert P. Wright family home and orchards were located on the south shore of Lake Chelan in an area called Wrightsville. Her father, George B. Flick arrived in the Chelan Valley in 1900 and had a homestead of 160 acres located above the area now called Granite Falls. Flick Creek, up Lake Chelan, was named for him and his brother Jim.
Georgia was a very talented and artistic woman as well as an accomplished carpenter and seamstress. She built the home she was living in as well as two previous homes -her current home being the only one built with power tools. Her daughter has fond memories of coming home from school to the sound of her mother's skill saw.
Georgia was always ahead of the times in her thoughts and actions. She believed in the importance of healthy living and was very happy when a health food store finally opened in Wenatchee in the early 60's. Her home and yard were filled with beautiful creations made from numerous natural materials. Georgia loved to collect pieces of driftwood from the shores of Lake Chelan to use to construct her driveway fence, make many lamps and to decorate.
She loved butterflies, toads and cardinal birds which reminded her of growing up in Iowa. Georgia always delighted in sharing many stories of the great adventures and fun she and her brother experienced on the large farm with many animals. Throughout her life she was always a true dog lover.
Georgia had a great sense of humor and was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother always putting the concerns and needs of others first. She loved helping her grandchildren and being a loving part of their lives. Her love of building is shared with her grandson, Jeff. Both grandchildren agree her pumpkin pies were the best.
Preceding her in death were her father, George B. Flick in 1952, her mother Ethel A. Flick in 1963, her brother William H. Flick in 1969, and her husband James Hanson in 2000.
Surviving Georgia is her daughter Rita Morris, grandchildren Jeffrey and Elizabeth Morris of Manson; her beloved dog Zelda; her niece Rhea Gilbert of Deer Park; and nephew Bob Flick of Mansfield and cousin Bettie Kenck of Chelan and numerous other cousins.
Graveside services for Georgia will be Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Riverview Cemetery with Pastor Kyle Plew presiding.
