Rev. Charles Boonstra conducted funeral services Wednesday afternoon, August 31, for John Groen, 58, of Orange City. Mr. Groen died Monday, Aug. 29, at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City.
He had suffered from a liver ailment for the past six years. He was able to be active most of the time, however, and assisted his son in the plumbing and heating business here.
He was a life-long- resident of Orange City; born here in November, 1897, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arie Groen.
Mr. Groen is survived by his wife, the former Johanna De Zeeuw; one son, Calvin; three grandchildren, Douglas Jon, Calvin Lowell and Rebecca Ann. He is also survived by four brothers Dick of Minneapolis, Ralph of New York, Arie of Minneapolis and Kenneth of Orange City; (Nell) Mrs. J. Coughlin of Canada, (Winifred) Mrs. Gerrit Wagner, Maria of Chicago and (Ruth) Mrs. Frank Ricter of Miami, Fla.
John Groen was a decorated veteran of World War I. He received combat bars for the battles of Aisne-Marne. St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and a special medal from Verdun where his name is inscribed in a book of gold.
Lawrence Van Wyk sang "My God and I" and "Beyond the Sunset" at the funeral service. Pallbearers were Robert Groen, Paul Den Hartog, Gradus Verrips, Jake De Zeeuw, Gilbert Kiezer and Paul De Leeuw. Van. Etten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, with interment in the Orange City cemetery.
Mr. Groen was a member of the Trinity Reformed church.
