Benjamin Franklin Frazy was born in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois in 1842-1844 to Benjamin Frazee and Mary Owen. His parents were both born in Clermont County, Ohio, where they married on 31 Oct 1824. They were among the earliest settlers in the Decatur area, arriving in 1825, several years before the establishment of the town.

Benjamin Franklin was among the youngest of their children. He was about 16 years old when both of his parents died, Benjamin in 1858 and Mary in 1859. He then moved in with his married older sister, Ellen Frazee Wheeler.

At the time of his first enlistment in Company K, 41st Illinois US Infantry, he was a farmer living in Clinton, DeWitt County, Illinois. He was 19 years old, 6'1" tall. He was dark complected with dark auburn hair and black eyes.

He joined for three years near Vicksburg, Mississippi on 18 Dec 1863 to Major McFadden. He mustered in on 17 Mar 1864 in Hebron, Mississippi. He was transferred to veterans battalion Company K, 53rd Illinois US Infantry.

After the war was over, Benjamin joined his cousin, also named Benjamin Franklin Frazee, in East Bear Township, Yuba County, California.

After the death of their parents, many in Benjamin's immediate family moved to Iowa where he died in 1875.
