We first find William J on the 1850 Houston County Census, 8 years old born in Louisiana. He is living with his parents, George age 46 & Catherine age 42. Listed are his brothers and sisters: Louisa, Lemuel, George, Ann, Catherine, Eliza, Joshua, & Joseph. Also in the household are John W Grounds age 23, Cintha A Grounds age 18, and baby Catherine Grounds under one year old. William J also had two more sisters not listed on this Census, Arra who was born in 1835 and Sarah who was born after the Census in 1852.

We next find William J Grounds on the Company Muster Roll, PVT, Co C, 13 Reg't Texas Cavalry. Enlisted on Feb 22, 1862 to Apr 30, 1862. Enlisted in Houston County, by Capt G English for a period of 12 months. Last paid Aug 22, 1862 by Capt English.

We know he married Louisa A Norrid, and find the birth of a son, Henry Horry Grounds born in June 1866. On the 1860 Census, he is living in Beat 9, Houston County, Post Office Augusta age 18, as Jasper Grounds, with his parents and four siblings.

On the 1870 Census, we find William Grounds a farmer, age 28, Precinct 2 Houston County, Post Office: Neches.He is 28 years old, Louisa is 28, Mary Grounds age 4, Leonidas Grounds 3 years old Ida Grounds 4 months old.

Oral family history says he died before 1880 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Grounds Cemetery. This appears to be true and we find Louisa was widowed and remarried and widowed again on the 1880 Census, living in Precinct 2 in Houston County.

William John had three brothers who fought in the Civil War.
