JACK GRAY GORDON '46

Capt. Jack Gray Gordon USN (Ret.) died on 21 October 1979 in Fairfax, Virginia. Graveside services were held on 24 October 1979 in Arlington National Cemetery.
Appointed to the Naval Academy from the State of Texas, he was graduated with the Class of 1946. His first sea duty was aboard the destroyer COGHLAN where he saw war action and was among the first Americans to enter Nagasaki after hostilities ceased. In 1947 he transferred to the submarine service, serving aboard IREX and SEA CAT before becoming executive and commanding officer of MENHADEN and commanding officer of CROAKER. Other duty assignments included torpedo research and development with the U.S. Naval Ordnance Unit in Key West, weapons and tactics instructor at the U.S. Naval Submarine School in New London, and study group member at the Institute of Naval Studies, Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended the U.S. Naval War College and received an M.S. Degree in Management from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He also was on the Staff of Submarine Squadron SEVEN in the Pacific and was Commander, Submarine Division THIRTEEN, Submarine Force, Pacific Fleet. Prior to his retirement in 1968, Captain Gordon was a member of the Joint Staff (J-5), for which he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his contributions.
Capt. Gordon joined Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. in 1970 and was associated with their Bethesda office until the onset of his illness in 1975. Surviving are his widow, the former Elizabeth Chance; two sons and a daughter; his parents, and a sister and a grandchild.
